COMO Castello Del Nero, Tuscany
Unveiled for Spring Summer 2024, this limited-edition collection blends shared codes of desire, design and technology.
It’s a match made in sustainable heaven. British designer Stella McCartney and celebrated Japanese artist Hajime Sorayama have joined forces to create a capsule that employs fashion and art to communicate messages of sustainability and powerful sensuality to a rising generation.
Launching with a campaign starring next-gen creative force Iris Law, Stella McCartney + Sorayama is an alloy of conscious fashion with chromatic futurism. For this special collaboration, Sorayama created a new piece for the capsule: a Vitruvian Woman in his singular ‘superrealism’ style, reimagined with Stella’s face.
The Stella McCartney + Sorayama capsule platforms a range of works by the Japanese artist – comprising silver strawberries, ‘Platinum Dream’ slogans and his signature Sexy Robots. It is woven with the energy of their decades-long relationship – one that spans companionship, collecting and creative collaboration.
“I came across Sorayama’s work in the late 90s when I was living in Paris and was absolutely mesmerised by its cheeky sensuality and airbrushed quality. I met with him when I was next in Japan; we have been friends and I have been collecting his art ever since,” recalled McCartney. “He makes me laugh in a naughty way, and I hope this capsule communicates the playfulness and mutual admiration we have between us.”
Hajime Sorayama added: “I don’t know much about fashion but I do know Stella has put her heart and soul into the brand and built it with extraordinary passion and determination. Let’s take care of ourselves and keep creating work. I love you ❤️!”
Genderless, ageless and effortless, Stella staples become a wearable canvas for Sorayama’s art, rendered in sharp detail on ready-to-wear pieces crafted from 100% conscious materials. Key items include varsity jackets made using NONA Source repurposed deadstock fabrics, roomy Savile Row tailoring in responsibly sourced wool, Platinum Dream organic cotton denim sets, satin daytime pyjama sets and knitwear rendered in glimmering silver yarns. Both chromatic and cruelty-free, vegan accessories include silver strawberry hard clutches, iconic Falabella and Frayme bags, and Elyse platform derbies.
The capsule has already been teased at the Stella McCartney Summer 2024 runway show, as well as a special presentation during Shanghai Fashion Week. It marks the second collaboration between the British conscious luxury pioneer and the legendary Japanese creator, with the latter having created an ‘S is for Sustainability’ artwork in the McCartney A to Z Manifesto in 2021. This was featured on a limited-edition and numbered t-shirt, with proceeds supporting Doctors Without Borders Japan.
The Stella McCartney + Sorayama limited-edition capsule arrives in-store in two drops: the first in December 2023 and the second in January 2024.
